About football innovation

Innovations are changing our everyday life. With the implementation of goal-line technology in 2012, the first obvious technological innovation arrived in football. New ideas are the driving force of the football industry for improving comfort, safety and performance aspects for the players and referees on the pitch.

FIFA’s Football Technology Innovation Department covers the whole process: from the identification of football stakeholders’s needs, through the feasibility analysis of innovations, right the way to the development of global standards and introduction into the game.

The innovation process always starts from the ground level of the football world. The very real needs of players, coaches, teams or competitions serve as the trigger points for a research and improvement process to produce requirements and guidelines for products, installations and services directly related to the game. Once technologies mature in the game or the feasibility studies show that innovations will add value to the game of football, FIFA looks to establish a Quality Programme to standardise the use of products and technologies.
