Goal-line technology for FIFA Club World Cup Morocco 2013 underway
The project to implement goal-line technology at this year’s FIFA Club World Cup started with the selection of the German provider and FIFA licensed company GoalControl at the beginning of October.
Following a site inspection of the two venues, Marrakech and Agadir, the installation process is set to begin in order to ensure that all is ready for the tournament in December. Once installed and calibrated, the system will, as always, need to demonstrate it is working by passing the final installation test that will be performed by a FIFA-accredited test institute before the competition starts. The different conditions and challenges compared to the previous FIFA tournaments in which goal-line technology was used will help to demonstrate that such systems can be installed in different types of stadiums and environments.
When the tournament kicks off on 11 December, the match between Raja Casablanca and Auckland City will become the first to use goal-line technology in Africa. Overall, since the introduction of goal-line technology in July 2012, Africa will be the fourth continent to host an event in which the match officials have support in their decisions as to whether or not a goal has been scored.
